Interview with Smart

Name: Martin

Date of Interview: May 13, 2007

Area of Italy you live in?

Siena

Let us know a little about yourself?

Was married for 27 years but separated now and seeking new life in Italy, at least for the time being.

Why did you decide to move to Italy?

I just answered that! But I chose Italy in particular because I have always enjoyed my holidays here and I love the Italian people, the culture, the way of life.

What type of process did you go through to be able to move here?

Coming from the UK, all I had to do was jump on a plane and show my
passport.

How long have you been here?

As I write this I have been on Italian soil less than 24 hours. I am planning to stay here initially for seven weeks.

What type of adjustment problems have you had?

I'm still having them. I am feeling very disorientated and as I do not yet
understand much Italian, communication is difficult. Also, I came here
primarily to do some writing so I do not have a place of work or colleagues or even flatmates or any kind of mates, so I am pretty much entirely on my own right now. I aim to change this as I know I will get lonely if I don't.

What do you wish someone had told you before you made the leap?

It's too soon to answer this question. I'll have to come back to it.

What inside secret could you pass on to others looking to move over?

Ditto.

Do you think that you will stay forever?

I'm here until end of June but now that I have heard that Siena's famous
palio races take place at the start of July I am wondering if I should
change my return flight.
