I just returned from Chicago for our meeting with the consulate and it was a success! Contrary to what I have read and heard, the staff was really nice. Our application was accepted, we signed some forms and the documents were sent to our comune in Italy to get entered into the system. We were told that we are now officially Italian citizens. My mother was even able to get citizenship (I think at least, it wasn’t 100% clear) because she married my father before 1983 and hence automatically became a citizen. I guess we will see if she gets registered in Italy like the rest of us.We were told once we are registered in Italy, we can apply for our new Italian birth certificates and use them to apply for passports. We were told to wait 3-4 months before requesting the Italian birth certificates. I have a hunch it can be done sooner, as it is a tiny comune and it was able to process our requests surprisingly quick for documents in the original application. I would imagine that they may be able to process things faster since they are small and not as much of a bureaucratic mess as say one in a larger Italian city. Does anyone have any experience with this phase of the application that they would like to share? Any experience with the pre-1983 marriages that resulted in automatic citizenship for the spouse? Any experience requesting/obtaining new birth certificates from Italy, how did you pay/ inquire about them, how long did it take? Thanks for the input I really appreciate it.
