Now that they have BBQ sauce at the grocery store, I decided that I wanted to BBQ but did not want to spend the 4+ Euro for a small jar so wisked up something on my own. If you want a spicy, sweet, flavorful recipe, here is what I did:
2 large red onions, chopped then sauteed in olive oil until transluscent
To these I added 3 tablespoon packed dark brown sugar (well zucchero di canna), 2 tablespoons of molasses, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 tablespoon 5 spice powder and 1 teaspoon crushed red peppers. Sauté for a bit longer then add 2 tablespoons vinegar (I used rice vinegar) stir and cook for a minute then add 1 bottle of ketchup and 2 bottles of pomodoro passato. Cook until thickened (I cooked it on a low flame for about 40 minutes). Adjust sweet/salty/sour as needed.
SO GOOD!!!

Grazie for the recipe! As soon as the snow melts my mind goes to the grill. Can I ask where you found the Molasses ? Sounds like you made a visit to the Oriental store...5 spice & rice vinegar. Any luck finding some good chili powder too?
Dual citizen living in Umbria and loving it
Molasses I got at NaturaSi (a natural foods chain) and the rice vinegar I got at the restaurant supply store in Siena. The 5 spice I get from Holland and Barrett (they have great prices and shipping is max 6,95 per order, even if you order 20kg of stuff!) They also have other spices as well as molasses http://www.hollandandbarrett.com/pages/categories.asp?cid=556&searchterm...

Grazie for the info and happy grilling; looks like we won't have too much longer for this inverno.
Cadanna in Assisi
They have my holy grail, PECANS!
COOP in central Italy has American style brown sugar (their Solidal brand). I've bought it in Terni and Fucecchio.
Cadanna, winter's not over until my husband has put out basil plants and had them freeze solid (sometimes it's necessary to repeat this operation a few times.).
