I was hoping someone here has had experience in dealing with the Italian consulate in Chicago. I have spent all this week trying to make an appointment with them to start my citizenship process, when I call they tell me that I have to make the appointment online. So I searched through their website numerous times and only found a form to schedule an appointment, so I downloaded it and filled it out, scanned it and emailed the consulate with the form attached to the email. I sent a brief description and the form to both their general email and the citizenship department email. I quickly got a response from the citizenship department email that the person will be out of office until August 20th but I have not received a response from their general email. Every time I call, they tell me to schedule an appointment online or no one answers the phone. This is very frustrating, does anyone have experience getting their citizenship through the Chicago consulate? Am I missing something here? Any help would be so appreciated. Thanks.

You will find a wealth of information on the process and information on the Chicago Consulate.
Unfortunately you have hit the time of the year when things stop and everyone heads off on holiday.
Right now the Chicago Consulate on their web site is stating:
Please be advised that we will schedule appointments for the Italian citizenship until the end of December 2012 ONLY for the requests submitted up to July 6th, 2012.
New appointment requests for the year 2013 will be accepted starting from November 15th, 2012.
It looks as right now 2012 is closed out and they will start booking 2013 starting on 15november2012.
Also:
There is an address listed to send the form. You will find that you will need to follow the instructions as stated or they will not respond. Sending to any other address will in many cases not be forwarded and deleted.

Wow, I can't believe I missed all that. I feel like a real dumb*** now, THANK YOU SO MUCH DAVE! I sincerely appreciate all the help!
It's advisable to request your appointment a few minutes after midnight Chicago time on November 15. Judging from previous reports, Chicago's appointment list fills up within a day or two, and it's first come, first served. Follow the instructions exactly, and make sure your e-mail program isn't stamping your e-mail with a date prior to November 15. The best way to do that is to check the clock on your PC/Mac, wait at least for 12:01 a.m. (on November 15), then click "New E-Mail" (or equivalent). If you're in a different time zone, adjust accordingly so that both the sending and the receiving is clearly on the 15th.
And yes, this procedure is probably as ridiculous as it sounds. So it goes.
I had my appointment in Chicago in July. Ms. Ferro, the official that deals with citizenship, said she will be in Italy until the end of August. She is very nice and easy to work with. If you have any sepcific questions, let me know-I'd be happy to help you any way I can.

Thanks BBCWatcher, lol yeah it does sound ridiculous but at the same time I have no trouble believing it. Hahaha
Thanks Chris! I do have some questions, but lately I've been so busy that I haven't had much time to check these forums. First chance I get I'll send you a PM or something, if that's ok.
Thanks again guys!
there u will get towed big time
Just a thought. I was staying in Chicago, but ended up applying in Detroit, where there was much less of a backlog.I did this by establishing Michigan residency. I'm not sure which states fall under Detroit jurisdiction, but all you need is a drivers license and mailing address from one of those states. A friend's or relatives house will do. This was about four years ago but the whole process only took about 6 months to get an appointment and recieving that lovely confirmation letter. As far as US state residency was concerned for taxes and what not, they don't really care where your drivers license is from. Or at least they don't check.
Admittantly, not quite honest, but I had family in Michigan, so as far as the consulate was concerned, it was legal.

That is also an idea. I'm from Michigan, and all of my records are from there. I went there to have my records "authenticated" by the Detroit Consulate. They are much easier to work with. In fact, Ms. Cervone, the official in Detroit, asked me why I didn't use my parents' address and apply with her. LOL I probably should have because it all would have been done a year earlier, but once I was at the Chicago consulate, things were fine.

I have dealt with the Chicago consulate. When the comune in Palermo was dealing with them they were quick to respond (I applied in Palermo)..within days. Since you're applying in the U.S., that doesn't apply to you. On the other hand, I just made an appointment at the Chicago consulate for my grandparents (they are now applying). I tried to make an appointment for them back in March, but they replied telling me they'd get back with me in June since all the appointments were booked.
I ended up emailing her back myself at the end of June, and she replied with an appointment for them in September. This is normal for them. They don't respond right away and their appointments fill up fast. I would follow the advice of the others..do it right on that day!
