I'm almost afraid to ask for fear I might get laughed off the board....how hard is it to find a reasonably priced used car to buy in Italy? I am assuming it would be cheaper than renting and that that leasing probably is not even an option. And what about financing options on used cars? And does one have to hold an Italian or EU license to buy a car? I know I can rent and drive on my US license but not sure that would apply to buying.
Any advice more than welcome.
thanks!

You can buy a used car here and drive with your U.S. license but need to meet some requirements:
- you need a valid PdiS to register the car
- you need to have valid residency for the annual registration taxes
- you cannot have residency for more than one year and still drive with an American license.
I sold my son's car yesterday (registered in my name - long story, mainly insurance related) for 200 euro. Car was old (maybe 12 years) but not a lot of mileage and with new tires (and can't remember what else). A local mechanic had it and sold it to someone who needed a fairly reliable car that didn't cost much. The mechanic did not take a cut so the buyer got it for 200 euro plus the cost to change ownership. Some car dealers can also have decent used cars - but I'd ask friends before just heading out on my own - there are plenty of "sharks/snakes" out there.
Thanks Vicky, very helpful to know. I should be able to meet those requirements but I really appreciate knowing the parameters. Very useful to know it's actually doable.
Look HERE to get a feel for prices or, perhaps, even locate and purchase the car of your dreams
