I've read every posting about mattresses, but didn't see anything about where to buy a queen size mattress in Puglia. I finally made the move and am renting a house in Lecce. Yippee! My stuff is coming by boat in a couple of weeks (I hope), but I did not ship my mattress. It was 18 years old, and the box spring fabric was torn plenty. However, my 18-year-old mattress looked like it was in much better shape than the brand-new mattresses I've seen in store windows here. Is there anywhere in Puglia where I can buy a new, very firm queen size mattress, even if it costs a lot? Good quality mattresses cost a lot in the US, too. Is my only alternative to buy and ship a new mattress from the US? Thanks. Adrienne

Ask the neighbors. Most likely there is a shop or two that make custom mattresses to your specs. The stuff in the shop windows tends to be cheap and cheerful.
Do you mean a U.S.-size queen, or a materasso matrimoniale? Don't know where you would find a U.S. queen in Puglia.
A materasso matrimoniale is wider than a U.S. queen mattress but a bit shorter (160x200 vs. 152x203 for a queen). Ikea in Bari has a good selection, including very firm ones.
Yes, a US Queen size. I need the length, and all my bedding is made for that size. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll look at the IKEA website, and hope for the best, although in the US, IKEA textiles and upholstered furniture are not very sturdy. I'll report back!

I had a king size mattress custom made here and I was happy with the price and the comfort. We went right to a local mattress factory and they came and measured my bedframe and we adjusted a bit from there. I think it took about a week to be delivered (maybe less). I have also found that queen size sheets from the states fit the matrimonial mattresses here more or less (but if you need the length of the Queen size, then I guess you'll have to go custom).

When I still lived in Puglia I got my "matrimoniale" size bed at IKEA in Bari.
But, I have lots of friend in Lecce - I can ask them... I still think Bari is worth the drive.

Hi, Diane. Do you still have the contact info for the custom mattress shop? Grazie mille. Adrienne
Grazie. Will do. Life is sweet!
The really, really good news is I finally got everything from the port in Napoli. It took four days at a hotel (when I thought I would be returning to Lecce and my pups the same day) and lots of tears and documenti, but I finally got mia macchina. Then last Monday, my stuff came by truck to Lecce. Oh, happy day: I am eating with metal forks and spoons and even have knives and bowls. What joy! Don't ask about the customs stuff.
Now, about the mattress. My queen size bed is one of the few pieces of furniture I took along (in pieces, though, to be reassembled in place). It has wooden sides, headboard, footboard, canopy, and posts. I went to three mattress shops in Lecce and Campi Salentina, each saying the other could help me, but in the end nobody could. The Pignatelli store in Campi Salentina tried very hard and was willing to come and measure the bed. The problem is I can't put the pieces of the bed together until I have the mattress because the bed has a big canopy with wide wooden corner posts all the way to the top and won't fit through the door to let me sleep on the lumpy thin bed here while the new mattress is being made. I could put together the bed and take it apart again, but it takes hours and hours just to take it apart, and I fear that if I do it too many times, I will strip screws.
I've contacted mattress stores in Switzerland, Germany, France, the UK, and even the US to see if they would ship to Italy. Niente.
Someone posted some time ago about a custom mattress shop. If they are familiar with queen bed and mattress sizes (not exactly the same), it could work. Does anyone have the contact info for the custom mattress shop? It can be anywhere where they are willing to deliver to Lecce, Italy. Thanks much.
I'm happy to report that my lovely queen size mattress finally arrived a couple of weeks ago. I had exhausted every source I could think of first in Italy and then in neighboring European countries. So when I was in the US in May to attend my granddaughter's university graduation and a family birthday party, I visited a mattress store in Manhattan. The New York Times Magazine ad for the store said they shipped mattresses everywhere, which a phone call confirmed. The mattress and box spring were shipped by air and expected to arrive in Lecce, Puglia in 5 to 7 business days. I think it reached Italy within that time but because of miscommunication, Customs, etc. delivery came in about six weeks. The cost was extremely high, not for the mattress and box spring, which were quite reasonable, but for shipping, Customs, delivery to my place, etc. But all is well, and I am a happy camper with my truly comfortable mattress fitting my queen size bed and all the bedding I already had. The shop is Charles P Rogers: www.charlesprogers.com.
