The View from Il Loggino

This is Bruce. She was four years old on May 1 and yesterday she came to live with me. She's looking at me that way because, as everyone knows, while dogs have masters, cats have staff, and she's saying, "OK, more food."

While she settled in, Gary and Zak hung out all afternoon and Gary put up lights and lots of my newly framed pictures. Bruce really appreciates her new surroundings.

A few strange images from the last three days. We were in Venezia and it was as hot and humid as it gets. We were, however, on a mission to find a venue for a friend of Gary's who's coming for the biennale in 2007. And we were celebrating Zak's birthday.

Here are two pictures: one is a ghostly shot of a famous spiral staircase which we went to look at around midnight. The other is a detail excerpted from a shot I took in my favorite restaurant in Venice and I'm not going to tell anyone which one it is because there are only twenty seats and I plan to eat there often, for example, when I go back in the winter to shop without looking like a bucket of water was just dumped on me.

Then there are a couple of shots of the inside of a palazzo on the Grand Canal and another quite normal picture of Zak and I on the terrace at the Bauer for drinks before dinner.

They're all mixed up but you get the idea. I am very glad to be back in my own home in the Val d'Orcia tonight. Much dryer and a bit cooler.

We won the World Cup last night!!! And today I finally mailed in my tax returns (U.S.) for 2005. I'm off to Venice for a few days with friends. I owe alot of people e-mails, but will answer them all when I get back.

We only had one week of hellish weather at the end of June and things are lovely right now. Just a few notes:

Italy beat Germany. Yay! Bush is still in office. Boo!

I am adjusting so well that I have forgotten what it's like to live anywhere else. My language skills need more work - a huge understatement- but I am getting along and will study more in the winter.

The house continues to evolve. Una casa vissuta, according to my friend Carmela and her daughters. It's really a great place to hang out with friends with dinner on the table, music, and good wine.

Yes, it was really noisy here last night. Great whoops of joy echoing through the town at the two goals and then the cars flying flags, honking and speeding through the village. Great fun! Italy in the final for the World Cup. Che gioia!!!

I was walking back from the parking lot last night and two guys stopped and asked if I was the American with the peace flag flying out the window. Then they said, "Complimenti!!!" and we shook hands and went on our way. Nice.

Going up to Venice for a couple of days next week with Gary and Zak.
