It is the same with almost anything that remains abandoned. Friends, sweethearts, places, homelands, houses, and this castle in my mind. After a certain period of time the roof goes and there is no turning back. Still it is important to see what kind of a ruin remains, for it is my contention that only the greatest works make beautiful ruins.

The Stone Carvers

After some days of rain, while I studied my memories of friends and places I've left behind and wondered what to do with them, I came back from a beautiful sunny day with friends at the communal farm outside Siena and happened upon this passage in a borrowed book. It seems fitting for anything I've left behind that won't stay current.

I love it. I've often searched for more heartfelt words to explain the saying, 'Friends who have left footprints on the heart.' That does it perfectly.

It is a wonderful quote . . . so true, so melancholy. I found your blog via a link on pinksundrops page and ended up reading every month for the past two years. I feel as though I know you a bit but would like to know more. I'm on blogger, too. I live in Sicily but work within a military community. Don't worry, I'm a liberal through and through and most of my colleagues can't stand Bush. I'm not quite sure how to email you directly, but I'd like to. I'm at hdlions@yahoo.com My name is Maryellen.
