My free lunch!
I was a bit surprised yesterday to hear my doorbell at 12.15pm....Surprised because this is the time that just about everyone in the village sits down to lunch.A quick peep out of the kitchen window revealed one of my neighbours from down the road a bit - 83 year old Maria. My first thought was that 'something has happened', you know what it's like, anything out of the ordinary and the mind races around the what's and wherefore's!
But having let her in she made a beeline for the kitchen with (what was obviously) a plate wrapped up in a cloth in her hands. Bless her - she was chuckling away and saying to me - "It's a surprise for you..."
Once she was seated in the kitchen with due ceremony she unwrapped her gift - a plate of home made (the pasta too) LASAGNA and it was still really hot!
Well there was nothing for it - she clearly expected me to eat it there and then!!! I just couldn't disappoint her - even though I tried explaining that 'I usually eat about 1pm' (yeah - right! Forget it...) she wanted to actually see me enjoy her gift. Of course I did eat it there and then. Oh and 'man' was it gooood. It was 'to die for' - honest!
Despite the fact that my own 'almost ready lunch' became my supper - the surprise on my part and the obvious sense of satisfaction on hers was worth every mouthful of that delicious lasagna. On her way out she told me that she will make home made pizzocheri soon and will bring me some. BUT, she added, she will tell me the day before so I won't have to bother to cook!
With neighbours like this - who wouldn't be a happy bunny?

I KNOW pizzocheri. You can't eat that! It will kill you. I made it once. There's so much delicious fat in it you could power a submarine with it.
Alas - I know pizzocheri too...
At least a zillion calories per serving when I counted them last.
But if I do eat a portion of this forbidden delight then I give up on my ONE pizza a month allowance.
And anyway - the Valtellina pizzocheri do at least have cabbage in them (and that's good for me). Unlike the Val Chiavenna pizzocheri that dont!!!
Hahaha....
CAN I HAVE MARIA PLEASE, I AM USUALLY THE ONE WHO SHARES FOOD WITH MY NEIGHBOURS,
YOU MUST HAVE DONE SOMETHING GOOD TO HAVE AN ANGEL LIKE HER NOCK ON YOUR DOOR WITH SUCH A LOVELY GIFT.
TINA
Thank you Tina. You always make such nice comments - but who are you? How did you find my blog? I can't place you from any of the forums I go to and I don't think I know anyone (apart from you and Glen) in Kentucky...
Carole
DEAR CAROLE,
THANK YOU FOR YOUR KIND WORDS, I LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR BLOG AND SO DOES GLEN, I CAN'TREMEMBER HOW I FOUND YOU EXACTLY, IT MAY HAVE BEEN SLOW TRAV OR BARB AND ART OR EX PATS :) NOT SURE. ONCE THROUGH YOUR BLOG, I TRIED TO SEND YOU OUR E-MAIL ADDRESS . I WISH I HAD THE PATIENCE TO LEARN TO USE THE BLOG BECAUSE TO SHARE INFORMATION AND YOUR OWN LIFE'S JORNEY IS SUCH A GIFT TO US WHO CAN APPRECIATE HONESTY AND KINDNESS. IT REMINDS ME OF MY CHILDHOOD WHEN WE WOULD LISTEN TO REAL LIFE EXPERIENCES AROUND THE KAFFEE TISCH. WE DID NOT HAVE TV AND AS KIDS WHERE EXPECTED TO BE QUIET AND THAT'S HOW WE LEARNED FROM OUR ELDERS, ONLY THEN I DID NOT KNOW I WAS LEARNING, IT WAS JUST SO INTRESTING. WE WHERE ALL DIRT POOR THEN AFTER THE W2 AND SO MANY STORIES WHERE ABOUT LOSS HUNGER AND SURVIVAL AND MOST MEMORABLE THE LITTLE ACTS OF MERCY BY ALL SIDES. I WISH I HAD THE TIME TO WRITE THEM ALL DOWN BEFORE THEIR LOST, I PRAY SOMEDAY SOON I GET TO DO THAT, I STARTED TOO, AFTER 1987. GLEN AND I STILL DREAM OF COMING OVER FOR OUR RETIREMENT AS SOON AS WE SELL THE BLUEBERRY PATCH. I PRAY FOR A YOUNGER FAMILY TO COME ALONG AND LOVE IT. IN THE MEAN TIME "I PRETEND I AM PACKING" SO THAT AT LEAST I GET SOME "40 YEAR OLD DUSTBUNNIES AND ALSO THE ALWAYS WANTED TO GET DONE PROJECTS" OUT OF THE WAY FIRST. CAROLE, IF YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ME ON HOW TO START BLOGGING, I APPRECIATE IT, I THINK I COULD ENJOY THAT. ALSO IF YOU KNOW HOW TO GET OUR ADDRESSE THROUGH THIS THAT WOULD BE FINE. AFTER I TYPED I ENTER THE "OTHER" BUT IT ALWAYS COMES UP ANONYMUS, YOU KNOW I AM NOT THAT :)
BY THE WAY I FOUND THE PIZZOCHERI RECIPE, GLEN AND I LIKE TO TRY TO MAKE OUT OWN PASTA SOON.
THANK YOU AGAIN,
TINA AND GLEN O.
Carole, this is wonderful, having neighbours who bring you lovely, freshly prepared food. You're very fortunate!
By the way, I like the pics of your home. It's certainly changed lots. Well done!!
A presto, Steph
yummy! I have to say, Italian lasagna is far superior to the american version! I had lasagna night before last for dinner, but it came frozen in a box. not my ideal dinner, but alas I was feeling too lazy to cook something of my own.
