Meet Rob & Deb!

Well Rob and Deb arrived last Saturday from England. After all the worry of the flight problems leading up to their holiday their flight, apart from a delay of an hour on the take off time, the passage through the two airports - Gatwick and Linate (Milan) went without a hitch.

Their week here with me flew by though. On the Sunday I took them up to San Moritz and we went over the Bernina pass and they saw the 'Diavolezza' mountain range which is nearly alway covered in snow even when we are being 'almost' cooked alive with the heat this year. It didn't let us down at all either - the snow was truly spectacular. We then went on to Livigno - the freeport between Italy and Switzerland, and from bright sunshine we ran into a hailstorm, and a cloudburst. It was just too cold for them to even consider getting out of the car. (None of us had bought jackets or cardigans - and boy was it cold!)
That evening I treated them to supper at the 'usual' mountain restaurant so they could sample the Valtellina specialities....they enjoyed it all except the 'polenta taragna'! But they both drooled over 'Mama Santina's' pizzoccheri and her 'tira-mi-su'.

They hired a car for three days which gave them the opportunity to 'go explore' on their own....my tastes are more in line with those of Rob's mum and dad and my other friends Pat and Jo...So they enjoyed exploring the sites around the lake, visiting a large market at Lecco and going up on the little train to Brunate above Como. They tried the ferry accross the Lake to Menaggio and 'loved' Bellaggio.
On thier last evening we went up to a small village pizzeria for a traditional pizza, and they were intrigued by the 'wood oven' and the speed with which their pizza's cooked.
As you can see from the photo of them, they concluded their meal with 'merengata con cioccolato caldo', 'tartufo nero' and an 'affogato al caffè'....

They left this afternoon and phoned to say they had arrived safely. It has been a real pleasure having them here with me as they are two very 'down to earth' people - no airs and graces at all.... and Rob (bless him) rebuilt an old wardrobe I had for storage in my attic and built a garden bench I had but was unable to put togehter myself! For that help I am very grateful to him for doing it and to Deb for letting him. Thank you both.

When I got back from taking them to the airport, Ciccio (who stayed at home), was most upset as they weren't in the car. He would not settle until I showed him the inside of the car and that they weren't still in it!!! He loves any company and Rob played what we called 'roustabout' with him...something I can't do - oh he enjoyed it so much! But was he out of breath after all this fun!

I do hope they can get over to visit again - and maybe for a bit longer next time. One week just flies by I'm afraid!

Now it's just another seven days and #1 son arrives...it doesn't seem that it is eight months since I last saw him! But we do talk frequently so that does help things along when I miss him.

The Lower Walls!

Well being the 'holiday week' there's been no workers here at 7am every morning - which has been nice.
The lower walls which will be underground - hence the cement protective boxes around the window - are almost finished. The lower living part of the house is to the right here and faces away from me and will not be below ground. then the stairs they have built lead up to the two bedrooms I believe. The wide entrance is to the garage and storage area (see the columns in the centre for the floor).

The lower quarters can be seen better here. My goodness it is certainly solidly built.

And 'last but not least' I'm showing off again.... Can you see how my peaches are 'beginning' to ripen. they've actually got a bit of colour on their cheeks!

Oh I can hardly wait 'til I can eat the 'first' peach off MY tree!!!!! Posted by Picasa

Holiday...What Holiday?

Today was Ferragosto in Italy - it's the 'big' summer festival and loads of people (like millions) arrange their annual holidays around this date. It's usually a time to get together with large groups of family and/or friends and a good excuse to book (sometimes months ahead) for a multi course meal in an 'out of the way' restaurant or 'agriturismo'.

Last year the family (including 'Moi') went to a small place near Piona called 'Il Mercante', and the year before we all went right up to Clusone - above Bergamo - for the same reason.

But this year? Zilch! No one has mentioned a thing - no forward planning - Nothing!!!! No phone calls, no surprise visits from anyone. So it was a quiet, light lunch, then a snooze in the armchair with the 'mutt' this afternoon. No one was answering the phone so they must have been doing something else - somewhere.

I couldn't let Ferragosto pass by though without a 'little' celebration of kinds, so this evening I went to a little pizzeria that I know well, and had a pizza, and a quarter of wine (250ml) and (Ssh don't tell anyone) my very first taste of 'pancotta' with strawberry syrup. Didn't think much of it though...a bit like white, tasteless blanc-mange.... So I sat there and chatted a bit with the owner (Cristina) and with a middle aged German family at the next table. Then? Well then I came home..... I don't usually mind going out to eat on my own. But for some reason 'today' seemed different and I didn't enjoy it at all. In fact I wish now that I'd not bothered.

Corners of the 'Jungle'!

Here are a couple of the 'odds and sods' that can be found in my garden (aka 'the jungle')

The quince bushes - which 'friend Ginger' identified for this ignoramus are full of fruit this summer. But unfortunately I'm sure it will be poor quality as it was too late to prune the bushes because the flowers were in bloom. But this will be done next spring. So in the meantime I have the opportunity to do 'trial runs' of several recipes that kind folk both at 'Expats' and "Amici" have offered me. Some of them sound really tempting, and I'm sure will be even better next year when the quality of the fruit will almost certainly improve.
The second photo - if you enlarge it and look with something like a Sherlock Holmes magnifying glass - is MY peach tree! I am immensly proud of this tree - not because I planted it - I didn't.... But because I've GOT A PEACH TREE!!!!! I know it's probably 'the norm' for many of you, but for me it's an 'almost miracle' . Coming from the cold, windy shores of Britain, peach trees were about as rare as hens teeth up there. Until I came here I had never actually seen a peach growing!

Yet now here I am with my own 'small scruffy' peaches. Which - all being well - will be better next year after pruning!

(Once again - click over the photo and you 'just might' see a few of 'em)

And finally perhaps my favourite little corner. Still in a dreadful mess I know. But hey - pennies don't grow on trees - well not on mine anyway!
I adore this little corner under the two pines and right next to the channel for the mountain stream.

Then to the left you can just see the delapidated - but still useable 'hay/wood store'. Plans for this corner? Oh yes indeed..... Between the trees I hope to have a granite bench with a low granite table in front of it. Perhaps one or two stepping stones leading to the 'store' and some of that ground cover that doesn't allow weeds to grow!
It is a wonderful place to sit in the shade of the pines - even on the hottest of days, because just to the right is the 'gap' that leads to the 'baby waterfall' site and the deep gulley that comes right down from the mountain across the road. This ensures that there is always a breeze here, and in the heat of the afternoon believe me there is nothing better!
Hopefully this will be done next spring - ready for some nice relaxing hours sitting there in the afternoons. Posted by Picasa

Just A Quiet Moment!

A fellow Admin/Moderator named Rosie on our "Amici over the Ocean" site has just sent this to me.... It is just so beautiful! Just spare yourself a few quiet moments to look and listen.

I have just played it twice and haven't quite stopped crying yet. I wonder if it is a 'touch' of that old age creeping into my life now that is making me a little more mellow? But whatever it is - I'm far less 'feisty' than I used to be some moons ago.

So I'll just leave you a 'mouse click' away from the message. I do so hope you enjoy it too.

Trojan Horses!

Like the 'eyes'???? Yes I was jealous of those on Annika's blog (lol). So - though not a 'whizz' like her with these things - I just cropped a photo....
No they're not seductive eyes - Ssh - but then neither is the rest of me.... But they've gotta be better than some of the damned awful photo's of me that are around.

But back to the Trojan Horses!
Well after countless days suffering a bloody Trojan Horse virus inside my PC , I'm now 'back on line' properly..... Over this period I've been almost too scared to send E-Mails to anyone 'just in case it multiplied and joined them too.
What it was doing was 'down loading' Internet files onto my 'C' drive to the point of almost making the whole thing 'crash'. I would then get a message that my 'C' drive was on the verge of collapse and did I want 'MS Dick Cleaner' - to search for and cancel files I don't usually use or those that are 'old'. At one point the 'available space remaining on the drive was only 28kb!!!!
It was telling me that it was urgent to free some space.... so - once again - I set it in motion.... It found me 628kb (whew!) But 20 minutes later the bloody virus had downloaded again!

A rapid call to #1 son - Sergio in the UK to ask if he could ask his friend to help me. 'Friend' works for Microsoft on their Help Desk and does take over your PC remotely (he's in London) and will sort out the problems. I don't know how much this service costs - Sergio says he will pay for the service for me!
But this guy 'took over' the pc at 13.45 yesterday...obviously I had to be sitting there in case - vis AIM he needed to ask or instruct me what to do. To see my cursor 'flying' around the screen and programmea opening, closing, downloading, installing and goodness knows what else, was fascinating. He also downloade the latest anti spyware (Defender) for me and the had to 're-install' all my personal files. Well - god bless him - he didn't actually finish all this until nearly 21.00 last night. We did have a 45 min. break about 18.30 while a particular file was downloading an needed over an hour to do so!!!

I never imagined - even with the three Trojan Horses that infected the PC last year (far less insidious that this one)...that virus' could be so dangerous. Well, we live and learn. But the eternal question remains----HOW DID IT GET IN?

Now for the walls!

Well the walls are finally taking shape, all be it slowly. But at the end of the day they're not of wood frame or ordinary brick construction - but reinforced concrete thoughout.

Actually watching this process as I am, right from the very start is a revelation. I did see the care which was taken with the restructuring of my house when they had to prop it up once they had excavated down 1.5m so they could lay the 'vespaia' (air circulation layer). But I also saw my new house in Grimsby (UK) being built from 'scratch' too. Geez, what a difference in materials and care... with hindsight I don't know how that house stood up to the North Sea gales!!!

But I know where I would rather have a house built - and by whom.... I can't imagine the wood frame type or the ordinary brick houses (that these days have wood frame 'paper thin' walls) standing up to extreme weather conditions. In fact we see the problems and the devastaion caused by tornado's, hurricanes, floods etc. and yet I really do feel that if many of those houses were built in this manner then the devastation may have been (would be) far less!

Watch this space for more (not very) exciting update on the house at the bottom of the garden! Posted by Picasa
