The New Plants

Not very good photo's as you can't really see the gorgeous colours.

This top photo is of the pretty 'Ornamental Plum' tree that bardigiana (aka Ginger from Expats) bought me.
Behind it you can see the 'Quince' tree's beautiful coral coloured flowers. And all around the base of both 'a delightful selection' of cultivated weeds' - truly 'non plus ultra'....

Here is the lovely pink 'ortenzia' (hydrangea), also bought as a gift by Ginger... you can just see a little porcelain rabbit poking his ears above the edge of the flower trough on the left - he was attached to the hydrangea pot until Ginger gave him a transplant to the trough!

It's been a funny day today - They had forecast thunder and lightning with little or no rain for this afternoon...but nothing has happened. One or two dark clouds away to the north - over Switzerland. But the Alps have kept them away.

I'm almost ready for my guest on Saturday...it will be nice to see her again. We worked together (but in different locations) as call centre directors . Then Pat took early retirement after 32 years working for the company (she says she started there when she was TWO years old - hahaha.... )By that time I was 'trouble shooting' for them and one of my tasks was to re-evaluate her old centre and either expand it or close it.... I selected the latter!
Her husband, Jo - a Belgian - is not coming with her this time, so I told him that 'we two' would probably 'go out on the pull' - or at the very least go 'George Hunting'!!!! His only comment was "Oh good - peace at last! Just get what you can for her......she's not worth a lot" (this - needless to say, was followed by a sharp crack and an 'OUCH' from Jo!

Tomorrow is the Circolo Dei Anziani in the village...I understand that there will be a doctor giving us a talk on the role of grandparents in the care of their grandchildren.... Not of great import for me - but I can at least enjoy the company for a couple of hours.....I'll have to be sure to avoid the 92 year old Maria though...she is still intent on teaching me to play Poker and Briscola, and on teaching me how to cheat!!!!! She is convinced no one knows, but everyone has told me NOT TO LET HER TEACH ME TO PLAY CARDS 'COS SHE CHEATS! Hahahaha.... Posted by Picasa

Easter Saturday With Friends

Well this was the 'gang' up here in the Valtellina on Saturday. When I knew that Terry (3rd from the right) was due over with his wife Sharon, little girl Holly and two friends I suggested that we go up to 'Posallo' for an Easter meal together. Of course trying to book a table there for the Saunday or Monday was impossible....they were fully booked for those days since January. But 'Nonna Santina' fitted us in for the Saturday. At the same time I had occasion to e-mail Ginger about an Expats question and the invite to her just sort of 'evolved'!

Terry and Sharon are the couple who have just 'completed' on their own piede a terre at Boschetto, just 3 miles from me.... They are using it for a base for winter skiiing and summer water sports on the lake. For skiing of course there is Madesimo, San Moritz, Bormio and Aprika - all within a short(ish) drive from here.

I asked the restaurant to do the standard holiday menu for this area and below are some of the things we had. Sorry, I forgot the 'antipasto' untill we'd eaten it all!!!!

This is the Pizzoccheri. Made with buck wheat flour and with a little cabbage, potato and melted 'local dairy' cheese!

This is the Polenta Taragna - made with polenta saracena flour, and with melted Bitto cheese folded in when hot.
Served here with this you can see the 'bocconcini' of veal with mountain mushrooms, and the darker 'cervo' (deer). Not shown, but which was added to the plate, was also braised beef with carrots, celery and onions.

And here are the 'Dolci' - we sampled the Tiramisu, the Pear and Chocolate cake amd the Blueberry 'crostata' - which seems to have disappeared from the photo's!!!

I didn't take a picture either of the plate of local 'cheese tasters' we had.

All this was, of course accompanied by the local wine (red and white) and the usual mineral water. Followed by the inevitable caffè....
I think everyone enjoyed not only the food but the company too.

Ginger (aka 'bardigiana' on Expats) arrived up here with her son Nick on Friday afternoon. Michele, who 'does' my garden, was here with his grandma (83 yo) Mariuccia helping him to deal with all the wood from my pruned fuit trees. I had just stopped them carting it off 'cos a local lady had asked if she could have it...... Just at that moment Ginger arrived. I had never met her and was devastated that I had to make her wait in the car in the lane until Michele moved his lorry out of the way.... But then they 'juggled' the vehicles around, and Michele and Mariuccia continued in the garden, planting some roses and some replacement plants (that the weight of the snow had killed) for me.

Ginger bought me two 'wonderful' plants as presents - and planted them for me.... A gorgeous pink flowering 'Ornamental Plum' and a pink flowering hydrangea! These will both compliment the white flowering apple and plum trees, the pink flowering peach and the 'coral/red' flowering tree, which Ginger identified as a 'quince'.... Plus I already have four large blue hydrangeas and several white and purple hibiscus....I think the small part of the garden, already planted, is going to look great this summer.... After showing them the house, we went down to 'lakeside' at Colico, and while Nick (who is 14) went and watched a local 'show' in the square by the lake, Ginger and I set the tone for her stay by nattering away and getting to know each other.... A delighful experience for me. I admit to being a little nervous at meeting her, as the first time we 'spoke' via e-mail, she said she was surprised that I didn't come across as a 'feisty' English woman at all..... So for the first hour or so I was trying to be on my 'very best behaviour' (LOL) - couldn't keep it up for long though! After a while I felt so comfortable and at ease in her company, it was as if I'd known her for years. After our supper we all played 'Scala Quaranta' for a while too.

On the Friday, it was a glorious sunny spring day, so my visitors were able to see the Valtellina in all it's glory. But by Saturday the clouds had floated down and it was raining and dull.

After the meal at Posallo, the others wanted to visit the Chocolate factory so off we went - then it was back to my place where Nick and Holly watched cartoons on the TV and we put the World to rights while sitting around my kitchen table. A really great couple of hours to end the day on.... But of course Ginger and I didn't (couldn't) leave it there. We carried on talking, after a very light supper of pasta in broth, 'til nearly midnight.

Then at lunchtime today I had planned on being with the family for lunch, but they phoned and they all came up to me - carrying the lunch with them! As they said the view here is better than their view of Milanese apartment blocks and the 'Tangenziale' (Ring Road)!!!!

I can't - and don't want to - argue with that! All in all, it's been a pretty good Easter! Posted by Picasa

My 'Back Yard' !

Finally a sprinkling of sunshine this morning - so while sitting waiting for my car to be washed and cleaned - it was so filthy inside and out, I could have grown 'spuds' in it - I took this snap of Monte Legnone in all it's snow capped glory. My house backs straight on to the base of this 'old lady'. The snows are really melting now - despite the fact that it snowed here above the 500m line two days ago. It's still quite 'nippy' unless your in the sunshine, but there is poor weather forecast again for Sunday.

So here we are once again heading for Easter...We are going to have and 'almost' mini GTG here on Saturday... Expats members Terry and his wife and little girl with some friends, are over from the UK for some skiing and their house is just 3 miles from me... then 'bardigiana' and her son, also from Expats, are coming to stay with me for a couple of days - I'm really looking forward to meeting them both. For those of you who were up for the Colico GTG last October - we are going to the same mountain restaurant for lunch on Saturday. What's the betting that they want to go to the biscuit and chocolate factories too!

My 'family' are resting at home in Milano this weekend - getting ready for the 'Anniversary' on the 30th. But knowing them they probably wont be able to resist a quick visit on Monday. They turned up here last Sunday afternoon as 'a surprise' - and that was nice. But I do wish they would give me a bit of warning when they turn up with friends! Luckily I knew the ones who came with them last week.....

Ciccio just loves it when we have visitors....he bounces around doing his 'demented kangaroo' act and then chooses someone to sit and gaze at adoringly! I have no fears that he is transferring his loyalty, as once he discovers that visitors don't have 'special goodies' hidden in their pockets or bags, he's straight back to me. Crafty little s*d!

He showed me a new side to his character this week...he's going to be a good 'ratter' I think.
I have a 'mole' in the garden - it's just started leaving little mole hills across the 'lawn' (I'm kidding myslf about having a 'lawn'), and the 'mutt' must have heard the mole moving under the earth - Well he went 'berserk' and started digging like mad trying to get at 'whatever it was'... I had to stop him, or I wouldn't have had any garden left.
I hope to take some 'pics' this weekend so I'll post a few neat week...

The Chickens At Last!

Joking apart.... at last the end of the bl**dy 'chicken saga'!

I don't know why, but I thought I'd just give it another try before going to 'Nod Land' for the night....

And here they are - in all their 'scruffy' glory - sunning themselves at the side of the road, and taking some welcome 'dust baths'.... Now with neighbours like this - what else could I want ????

House To Let!

Well 'his lordship's' new summer place arrived today! Even if I say so myself - in comparison to what he was used to, his new pad is quite a 'Des Res'...

Mind you he doesn't seem to think so. Because it looks like real wood he thought at first it must be related to the trees in the garden (you know what I mean....). Well a sharp 'clout round the ear' (metaphorically speaking of course) soon changed his mind on that score. He still it seems, prefers to lay in the sunshine - which today is glorious up here.

Nicoletta came today and we (she) got all the windows cleaned while I washed all the curtains and they were re-hung 'just damp' to save ironing. Now that is a job well done... She also got the terrace furniture (sounds 'posh' but it's simply green plastic chairs and a table) down from the mansarda so I've been sitting in the sun a bit this afternoon!

I cleaned off all the dead leaves from last years geraniums and thaey are now hanging from the balcony. A nice drink of water has made them raise their 'scrawny heads' following a long winter sleep upstairs under the roof. I bought two nice rose bushes yesterday too. One yellow/cream Tea Rose, and the othere a large rose with white and pink flowers. They were on 'special offer' at the local supermarket at just €2.80 each. I think I'll put them in the narrow (18") border on top of the dry stone wall under the driveway. They should look nice there and I'll be able to see them from the downstairs windows. Can't see that border from the terrace as the 'false roof' hides it from view.
I think one of the locals is coming up tomorrow to collect all the branches from the tree pruning. He uses wood for his heating and cooking and is pleased to have mine 'free'. I'd probably have 'paid him' to take it away, but Nicoletta said - "Stai scherzando?" ("Are you joking"). She - it seems - told him I was really kind, and was giving it to him.... I'll say no more!
