A FARMER'S MARKET IN MARSCIANO

Marsciano Market

Good news for us! Every Saturday morning Marsciano will host a farmer's market featuring local produce! Although we love our weekly market on Mondays, this Saturday market will not only support our local community of small farmers, but we'll also get the freshest produce available....and probably save money too! I bought four eggplants at the market on Saturday, and while they were small, the cost was even smaller....80¢ for all four! If you're in the area on Saturday morning, stop by the old tobacco warehouse, located just behind the Coop supermarket in Marsciano for the freshest fruits and vegetables, as well as local wine and plants!

THE WEEKLY FARMER'S MARKET

I've written quite often about the wonderul seasonality of food in Italy, and about the weekly markets that are held in most Italian towns. Right now the markets here are full of oranges and clementines from Sicily, as well as apples, leeks and artichokes. We still have hothouse tomatoes from the south, but they certainly have more flaovr than what we'd get in the states. Why is it that vegetables from Italian hothouses can still have flavor? What happens to the veggies in American hothouses? Where does the flavor go...and why? The good news is that our friend Dana wrote about a way to get farm-fresh food in Louisville from spring to fall. Since Dana explains her reasons for wanting to eat fresh, seasonal foods on her BLOG so much better than I could, I'll let her words speak for both of us.

In addition to discovering the concept of the CSA (thanks Dana!), I also discovered a long list of LOCAL HARVEST FARMER’S MARKETS held all over the greater Louisville area, so yes, there is hope! Another good thing to look forward to when we return to the states....fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetables without all the hoeing and weeding. Although I'll always grow my own basil to ensure that I'll have enough to make plenty of pesto, and I might even grow a few tomatoes if I have room, I'm soooo happy to know that there WILL be a supply of fresh fruits and vegetables, at least from spring through the fall. I guess now I'll have to start freezing and canning more in order to get us through the winter!

Last week these flowers made a gloomy day so much brighter! Italians 'say it with flowers' much more often than Americans do, and with these beautiful colors and sweet little baskets, who could resist?
