TOO MUCH FOOD!
I know this has been discussed before, but I still don't understand: WHY do American restaurants serve such HUGE portions??? When we were working, and IF we had some self-control, saving half the meal to take home to re-heat for lunch the next day at work was fine, but really, do you think the
restaurant had that in mind? Couldn't they just cut the portions by at least a third? They could then reduce prices, which would make everyone happy, and maybe people wouldn't feel the need to clean their plate and we'd all lose a few pounds. Doesn't this sound like a win-win situation?
These huge portions always shock us when we visit the United States. We both love the Italian way of ordering food...course by course. I love being able to order an appetizer or pasta, and telling the waiter I'll decide later if I want to order anything else...and having this accepted as perfectly normal. This way I can guage I full I am and not end up with too much food. Really now, doesn't this system make more sense? Oh, and I do have to add that the portion sizes here in Italy are much smaller, so that yes, I sometimes do order several courses.
If anyone out there from the food industry can explain why the portions are so huge, I'd love to hear from you!

Oh how I so agree! "Uno per due".
I have not been there for a long time and mostly ate Pho or Thai or Chinese when I was there, but I have seen huge plates. I always thought it had to do with the US concern for getting your money-s worth. I know I've heard people praise the size of portions without having anything to say about the quality of the food.
OTH, serving sizes here are 2 to 3 times as big as they were 30 years ago, so it's like the march of the penguins or something.
