BUON NATALE
Every town, large and small, decorates the streets with lights for the holidays. Also quite common are displays of presepi, or nativity scenes. Last wednesday we drove up to Citta di Castello to have dinner with our friend Judith. We arrived early so that we could drive into the city to view the presepi on display, many on loan from Naples, where the making of these miniature scenes is quite a famous tradition.
The display, housed in the Duomo, contained many, many presepe, many minitature displays of traditional Italian homes, a section of decorations from around the world, and one area of presepi from Croatia.
Some of the displays were beautiful...unbelieveably detailed, imaginative and moving. Others, such as the presepe made from different shapes of pasta, were less inspiring. There were even a few I'd descibe as completely uninteresting, maybe even ugly.
